That one detail decides most of what matters: what you own, who can buy, and what can go wrong.

This guide covers how tokenized stocks work and the three legal models. Tokenized stocks are the equity version of that idea. Each one is a token on a chain like Solana or Ethereum. If the token trades above the share, an eligible trader can buy the share, mint a token, and sell it. If it trades below, they can buy the token and redeem it. Kraken calls this “a free market arbitrage relationship, not a contractual guarantee.” That is why a token trading on a weekend can drift from Friday’s close (Kraken Learn).

The three types of tokenized stocks

Not every token gives you the same rights. Investor.gov and an SEC staff statement from January 2026 sort tokenized securities into three models (Investor.gov, SEC statement):

Issuer-sponsored. The company itself issues its shares on a blockchain. The token carries the same rights as a normal share of that class, including voting and dividends.

Custodial. A broker or custodian holds the share, and the token is your indirect claim on it. Investor.gov says the holder gets the same rights and benefits as a regular shareholder, much like holding the stock through a broker.

Synthetic. A third party issues a linked note or derivative that follows the stock’s price. You have no claim against the company, and your rights can differ a lot from a shareholder’s.

Many retail tokenized stocks sit closer to the synthetic end than people expect. xStocks are “tracker certificates” that “do not convey shareholder rights, such as voting rights” (xStocks FAQ). In March 2026 the SEC said tokenized securities are securities and fall under SEC rules (Investor.gov). A token wrapper does not change that.

On September 17, 2026, the SEC gave tokenized securities venues a five-year conditional exemption. Issuers can still block a venue from tokenizing their shares (our coverage of the SEC exemption). Even so, many of the biggest retail products are still built for buyers outside the US. Kraken says xStocks are not available in the US, Canada, the UK, or Australia (Kraken xStocks FAQ). Robinhood’s stock tokens are an EU product.

Trading hours, fees, and dividends

Hours. Blockchains don’t close, but products do. Robinhood EU tokens trade 24 hours a day, five days a week. Weekend orders wait in a queue (Robinhood EU). Robinhood says trading in extended hours “involves additional risks” (Robinhood EU). Kraken says spreads are wider outside market hours (Kraken xStocks FAQ). Trading may also pause while a split or merger is processed (Robinhood EU).

Fees. The headline fee is only one cost. Add the spread, any stablecoin or currency conversion, network fees, and the cost of getting out. Robinhood EU charges a 0.10% FX fee when you trade (Robinhood EU). xStocks let retail holders redeem directly with the issuer only after KYC and with a $5,000 minimum (xStocks FAQ). Below that, your exit is selling to another buyer.

Dividends. xStocks reinvest dividends, net of taxes, into more tokens instead of paying cash (xStocks FAQ). Robinhood EU passes on a cash amount. It says this is “not considered dividends in the usual sense” and may be treated differently for tax purposes (Robinhood EU). Check your local tax rules before you assume anything.

The real risks of tokenized stocks

Tokenized stocks carry the normal risk of the stock, plus a layer of new ones:

Issuer and custodian risk. Your claim depends on the company holding the shares staying solvent and honoring redemptions. Kraken puts it simply: “A tokenized asset is only ever as strong as the legal claim behind it” (Kraken Learn).

Price gaps. When the stock market is shut, the token can trade on thin liquidity and move away from the share’s last price.

Liquidity and exits. Small tokens can have few buyers. Some products limit transfers. Robinhood says its EU stock tokens “can’t be sent to other wallets or platforms at this time” (Robinhood EU).

Smart contract risk. Bugs, bad price feeds, lost keys, or bridge failures can cost money, and recovery is not certain.

Rule changes. Rules differ by country and are still moving, so a product you can buy today may be limited later.

Proof of reserves helps, but it only shows that shares exist at a point in time. It does not tell you how fast you could redeem in a crisis or what happens if the issuer fails.

How big is the tokenized stocks market?

Still small next to the stock market, but growing fast. A DWF Labs report covered by Crypto Briefing put tokenized equities at $3.8 billion in early October 2026, up 483% since January, with Binance’s bStocks and xStocks each holding roughly a quarter of the market (Crypto Briefing). Issuer-sponsored tokens can carry full shareholder rights, but most retail tokenized stocks today are tracker certificates or derivatives. They follow the price without giving you the share or a vote.

Can US residents buy tokenized stocks?

Options are limited. xStocks are not offered to US persons, and Robinhood’s stock tokens are an EU product. The SEC treats tokenized securities as securities, so US access depends on how each product is registered or exempted.

Do tokenized stocks pay dividends?

Many pass on the value of dividends, but not always as cash. xStocks add tokens to your balance. Robinhood EU pays a cash amount that is not treated as an ordinary dividend.

Can tokenized stocks trade 24/7?

The blockchain runs all the time, but each product sets its own hours. Some trade on chain around the clock, while Robinhood EU tokens trade 24 hours a day on weekdays. Off-hours prices can drift from the stock.

Are tokenized stocks safe?

They are as safe as the stock plus the issuer, custodian, code, and rules behind the token. Check who holds the shares, how you redeem, and what protection applies before you put money in.

What is the difference between tokenized stocks and stock perpetual futures?

Tokenized stocks are usually backed by real shares held by a custodian. Perpetual futures are contracts that track a price with no share behind them, often with leverage and funding payments.
